| Students in fifth grade
work together as a unit on field trips and basic curriculum units.
An emphasis is placed on study habits and organizational skills using
a notebook with dividers required for every subject as well as a weekly
assignment sheet. Listed below are the subjects that fifth graders
study. |
| |
| Bible |
| The Bible series your child
will be using is published by the Association of Christian Schools
International. This program will focus on an overview of the
Old Testament presenting Bible characters in chronological order.
The application is derived from the choices made, whether good or
bad. Other activities are chapels, devotions, reciting the pledges
to the Christian Flag and Bible, and weekly Bible verse memorization. |
| |
| Language Arts |
| All of our language arts
books are published by A Beka Book, Inc. The reading text emphasizes
oral reading, comprehension, vocabulary building, and speed reading.
The spelling includes weekly topical word lists and vocabulary study.
The language book focuses on grammar and the writing process. Students
will also learn poetry by American poets. |
| |
| Social Studies |
| The United States
by Scott Foresman is the text we use. This is a study of American
history covering the time periods from the exploration era to post
World War II. |
| |
| Math |
| Saxon textbooks are used. Saxon books
are unlike traditional texts used in the past. They divide concepts
into smaller, more easily grasped increments. A new increment is presented
each day, and students work only a few problems involving the new
material. The remaining homework consists of practice problems involving
concepts previously introduced. Thus, every assignment and test are
a cumulative review of all material covered up to that point. |
| |
| Science |
| Our science text is Science Discovery
Works (Concordia). The topics covered are Plants, Solar System,
Energy, Work and Machines, Populations and Ecosystems, the Solid Earth
and Light and Sound. Individual experiments are conducted studying
the scientific method. This curriculum provides a solid foundation
in science which is soundly based on the Word of God and Christian
principles. |

| Spanish |
| Fifth graders have Spanish classes twice
a week using the award-winning Northern Arizona University Elementary
Spanish video program. |
| |
| Physical Education
|
| Fifth grade students have P.E. one period
twice a week. SCA has three full-time P.E. teachers who work with
every grade. P.E. teaches skills of various sports throughout the
year and knowledge of rules for each game. Teaching good attitudes
and sportsmanship is an important part of the P.E. curriculum. |
| |
| Computer Science
|
| Students are introduced to the use of
a word processor, data base and keyboarding. Students have computer
class once a week directed by our elementary computer specialist. |
| |
| |
| Fine Arts |
| SCA is fortunate to have special art
and music teachers who work with each class in kindergarten through
sixth grade. Fifth graders have art classes twice a week. They can
choose to participate in either the choral music class or the band
program twice a week. Both beginning and advanced band programs are
offered. |

Library |
Students visit the library once per week to check out books, and receive practice and instruction in a variety of areas including library skills, research skills and the use of reference materials, elements of different genre and author studies. The librarian also partners with the classroom teacher to support and enhance the academic instruction in the classroom. |
